Old World in the New World

Mendoza, Argentina is creating fun, fruit forward, value Malbecs. And there are certainly a number of higher priced, well balanced, blockbuster Malbecs coming out of said area. But rarely does one find earthy, old world values in Mendoza. Enter 2006 Weinert Carascal, a Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot blend. This is a wine that has our customers flipping over the old world, earthy style. Think great value Bordeaux at $10 per bottle. Rich fruit meets savory earth and balanced acidity with just enough age on it to start softening and adding secondary flavors. It is leaving the shop by the case, and none of us is surprised. We find many fantastic wines in the $10 range, but rarely do we find a diamond in the rough such as this.
